What the Foundation has done with the proceeds raised:

  • January 2012
    Awarded a grant to the Brain Injury Information Network of Maine. The BIIN is a partnership of organizations working together to share information, provide education, and promote promising practices that will benefit individuals with brain injuries, and their families. 
  • April 2012
    On April 5, 2012, the University of New England in collaboration with the Michael T. Goulet Traumatic Brain Injury and Epilepsy Foundation will present an educational Symposium. A Case Study has been developed with access to Michael’s complete medical record, and will feature a panel of family members fielding questions from the Interdisciplinary audience of professionals and students. Michael’s case study will focus on coordinated brain care, and how neuroscience discoveries along with inter-professional practices can improve patient and population health.
  • March 2013
    The Foundation Co-Sponsored a month long art exhibit on brain injury and pain at the Engine Gallery in Biddeford, Maine. On March 23rd Foundation Representatives along with University of New England Center for Excellence in Neuroscience volunteers attended the exhibit, providing helmet fittings and giveaways, demonstrations on helmet safety, as well as providing other activities for children and families.
  • April 2013
    The Foundation Participated in the University of New England Westbrook Rally for Bike Safety, providing the community with 125 helmets at their multi-sport helmet fitting and giveaway.  
  • May 2013
    The foundation attended the Epilepsy Walk in Saco, Maine.  Foundation representatives were present to offer private helmet fittings, answer questions, and offer information to attendees. With the help of UNE students Jackie and Amanda, seventy-five helmets were given away.
  • Spring 2013
    The Foundation awarded Saint Joseph’s College of Maine two $1000.00 scholarship to students fulfilling the requirements of our mission statement. We wish the well deserving recipients good luck with their collegiate experience.
  • Spring 2013
    The foundation awarded UNE Center for Excellence in Neuroscience with a continued grant, in the value of $15,500. This grant will partially fund the UNE CEN K-12 outreach program as well as provide matched funding with UNE CEN for two summer interns. The summer CEN intern program, is a twelve week program, in which chosen applicants collaborate closely with faculty and staff, to further develop outreach activities in relation to brain injury and epilepsy. Their research will be presented within the school systems.

    In addition, the foundation provided a UNECOM Medical Student matched grant with UNE CEN and UNECOM Faculty. This competitive award will go to a medical student demonstrating academic excellence and commitment to clinical research in neurology and neurocritical care.  Doctors David Seder and Richard Riker at Maine Medical Center have provided this research experience in the past.

  • Spring 2013
    During the spring of 2013, Foundation representative Danielle Goulet paired with University of New England CEN representative Michael Burman, visited local high schools to promote their “Battle of the Brain Contest”. The material composed will be put to use, in elementary education on brain safety. The participants from Thornton Academy, Kennebunk High School, and Biddeford High School put together very creative, well executed skits on brain injury safety and prevention. The winners were announced May 5th, and received a generous scholarship from the University of New England. Top participants were also provided with gifts of appreciation for their efforts.
  • Summer 2013
    The foundation approved a grant to the LaDawn Riding Center, in Dayton Maine.  The LaDawn Riding Center provides equine assisted therapy to disabled individuals. The program is overseen by a Maine-licensed Occupational Therapist and Licensed Therapeutic Riding Instructor. Our grant will go towards helmet needs of their riders.
  • Summer 2013
    The Foundation helped to raise the funding for four summer scholarships for a brain trauma survivor’s family, to UNE’s kidfit summer program. 
  • Summer 2013
    The foundation approved a grant to go to the Biddeford Community Bike Center. The Community Bike Center exists to provide youth enrichment opportunities for personal growth through bicycling-related activities. Our grant will fund 118 helmets for the Bike Center to distribute to the children their Volunteer mentors work with.
  • August 2013
    Foundation representative Brad Goulet and UNE Outreach Volunteers participated in the Casco Bay Fishing Tournament with a helmet fitting and giveaway, distributing over fifty helmets.
  • September 2013
    Foundation representative Lynda LeBlanc, along with UNE Center for Excellence in Neuroscience volunteers, attended the KAT Walk and Karo-5K. The Kat Walk and Karo 5K, is a walk and run along the Portland Boulevard for Brain Aneurysm prevention and awareness. Our foundation provided an information table, along with a multi-sport helmet fitting and giveaway. Over forty helmets were distributed.
  • September 21, 2013
    The foundation participated with Westbrook Public Safety Department, Hannaford, Saco & Biddeford Savings, & Ernie’s Bike Shop in a “Kid’s Safety Day”. The Foundation with the assistance of UNE Outreach Volunteers, custom fitted and distributed 150 Multisport helmets to youths and members of the community.
